It's, hands down, one of my favorite songs by them...
and the asshole they talk about, Bukowski,
his poem "so you want to be a writer?"
is the message for today,
for this week,
for this year..
for this fucking LIFE.

in spite of everything,
don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
fame,
don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you're not ready.
don't be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don't add to that.
don't do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don't do it.
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

It's not just true for writing,
it's true for our art in general..
Your art, regardless if that comes out as physical pieces of art, music, writing, healing, coaching, creating courses or membership groups, whatever your genius wants to express as, is art..
Even if/especially if it's you simply existing, being an example of what's actually available outside of the limited paradigm majority of the collective lives according to and by the rules of,
You are literally performance art.

Genius, by my own definition, is the spirit that animates your art..
your art is how you live your life.
It's your raging fucking fearless passion..
and it seeps out of you, even when you try to deny it.
So when we say, "i'm not even sure what my genius is", it's a desperate attempt at clinging to the identity we've been indoctrinated into.

Of course you know.
It's who you are when you stop trying.
β
We've all had moments outside of doing the work and weaving of the life we are passionate about,
and someone says some version of "you make it look so easy"
or you find people just telling you their whole life story even though you met only minutes ago,
or you're the one all your friends and family call for insight,
or i can't believe you're still going..

You're just letting your genius pour out of you without even recognizing it,
you can't help it.
and you don't have to try.
β
